Frequently asked questions
Q: Do I have to try out for the Girl’s Swim and Dive Team?
A: No. It is a no-cut sport. We usually have about 70-90 girls on the team.
Q: How much swim experience is needed?
A: We have an A team, for more advanced swimmers, and a B team, for newer swimmers. They practice separately but are still ONE team! Experience in middle school, summer league or a club team can help you to move up from B Team to the A Team.
Q: Do I have to be a year round swimmer?
A: No, but many girls on the team do swim on club teams in the off-season. There are many swim clubs in the area, feel free to ask any of the experienced swimmers what club they swim for off-season.
Q: When do practices begin and how long is the season?
A: The first day of practice is usually the 2nd Monday in August and runs through early November. Swimmers and divers that qualify for the State meet continue through late November.
Q: How often does the team practice?
A: Practice ranges from 18-20 hours a week, including after school every day, most Saturdays and 2-3 mornings per week before school.
A team have AM practices M/T/Th 5:30-6:30am
A team have PM practices M-F 2:30pm- 4:30pm
B team have AM practices W/F 5:30-6:30am
B team have PM practices 4:30-6pm
Q: When are the meets?
A: Dual meets are usually Thursdays starting at 6pm or 6:30pm – Schedule is on the website. (we need many volunteers for home meets-timers, runner, announcer, snacks, etc- check sign up)
The team also swims in several weekend invitational meets.
Early-Mid October when we enter Championship Season, there is a switch in groups. Girls are split into Conference and Non-Conference teams, instead of A and B teams .
Non-Conference group participates in the Northville Invitational meet. That is most likely the last meet of the season for these swimmers. Conference swimmers will continue swimming when they meet qualifying times for County, MISCA, Conference and State and there is room on the roster.
Special Meets: (start times vary often starting around 11am or noon)
Black/Orange meet is intersquad meet - all swimmers
Huron Relays Invitations – Select Swimmers
Rock Mauer Meet – Select A/B Team Swimmers
Wayne County Meet – Select swimmers, based on qualifying times*
MISCA – Select swimmers, based on qualifying times*
Northville Invitational – for all Non-Conference swimmers
Conference Meet – Select swimmers, based on qualifying times* - often takes place during the school day
State Meet – Select swimmers, based on qualifying times*
Q: What do girls wear to meets?
A: Girls often wear spirit wear for home meets and dress up for away meets
Tech suits are worn for County, MISCA, Conference and State meets
Swimmers must wear warm-ups at all meets. There can be borrowed from the school, or purchased – more info in the Team Package
There typically is a one-way bus to away meets, athletes need to find own rides home.
Q: What is a Team Package?
A: Each swimmer is required to purchase a team package which includes, suit, cap, t-shirt, etc. optional items to include in team package are yard sign, stickers, fan shirts, car decals, towel, etc. Orders and payment will be needed beginning of June.
Q. Why is there a Team Fee?
A. There are many costs to being a swim team - This fee will help cover team expenses such as picnic, goodie bags, snacks, mustang of the week prizes, fire up dinners, and includes a ticket for end of year banquet for each swimmer/diver. This also helps to cover the cost of assistant swim coaches.
Q: How do the girls get to know each other?
A: All activities (including fundraising) help to bond the swim team (and parents). Senior athletes plan a couple of team bonding activities each year for entire team including, participation is optional but encouraged
Cider Mill
